SCHOOL LIFE
The School Day
The school day balances the intensive academic focus of the morning classes with afternoon arts and physical education activities. Breaks between classes and a long lunch period create breathing spaces in the day, and off-campus afternoon classes, field trips, and internships let students to learn in different contexts. After-school sports and clubs allow students to pursue their interests more fully. The school day begins at 8:30 – for an article about the importance of getting enough sleep in high school, click here.

Community Service
We believe that world citizenship begins at home, so we want all of our students to be actively involved in the life of the school and its community. The student government plans events, reviews policies, and resolves conflicts, and the biweekly High School forum addresses local, national, and world issues. Students do volunteer work, raise funds for charitable causes, and do at least 30 hours of community service a year.
Celebrations
Celebrations and parties spice up the school year. There are many informal assemblies, and we celebrate students’ and teachers’ birthdays. We have Hallowe’en, Hannukah/Christmas, and Valentine’s Day parties, and all high school students are invited to the prom. In late December, the high school presents a solistice pageant, and in early June the whole high school goes on a trip to celebrate the end of the year.
