At Home & Abroad

Internships, Community Service and Field Trips

Internships are a chance to explore interests and connect with people and organizations in the Pioneer Valley. Students have done internships at local farms, craft studios, businesses, and a variety of service organizations. Some class trips have also had a service component.

All classes at The Hartsbrook School take field trips that supplement their academic and artistic work. Field trips allow students to experience other dimensions of the subjects they are studying. For example, a class may visit a lime quarry in conjunction with their course in geology and go flying as part of their study of meteorology. Classes also take extended trips that have a social and educational purpose. For instance, our ninth grade classes have spent a week in New York City visiting museums to see the works of art that they have studied in their History through Art course; our tenth grade classes have gone to Montreal, the Everglades, and an outdoor skills program; our eleventh grades have worked at Camphill Village for disabled adults or the House of Peace Sanctuary for war refugees; and our twelfth grades have participated in extended service trips to New Orleans, Ecuador, and the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

International Exchange/Study Abroad

The Hartsbrook High School has a vibrant international student program that allows our sophomores, juniors, or seniors to spend 2-12 weeks abroad. Each year about six to eight students go to France, Germany, Switzerland, or Spain, and about the same number of students from various countries come visit Hartsbrook on exchange. Because all Waldorf schools share the same curriculum, students who study abroad can still fulfill our graduation requirements.
